Things to Know When Picking Your Custom Furniture Manufacturer

12 May 2021

An interior designer’s job is not a simple one. In order to bring a client’s ideal vision to life, we understand there’s a lot you need to think about. From the essentials and decor of the room, to the colours, lighting and materials selected, and even to the accessibility and functionality of every piece, the workload is heavy.

Furniture is arguably one of the most important pieces in a room. Not only because your client needs comfort, but also because it can make or break the room you’re designing. After all, nobody wants the wrong furniture style or size to take away from the beauty of their space.

So, when it comes to your custom furniture, it’s important to find the right manufacturer. Looking for these four things will help:

1. Experience

When you think experience, think about two things:

First, think about what experience the manufacturer has. You want to make sure that the people you hire know what they’re doing and that they can do it well.

Second, think about what experience they can give you--the customer. An interior designer has unique needs because you work with clients, therefore you’re most likely looking for something for them. This experience is unique and it requires understanding. So, you also want to make sure that the manufacturer is able to honour you and your clients.

How many years have these people been in the industry?
What is their expertise?
How well do they work with interior designers?

These are all questions that you should ask yourself when searching for a custom furniture manufacturer.

2. Quality

When it comes to furniture, we all know that quality is everything, but quality custom-made furniture embodies various aspects because it literally starts from scratch in order to be tailored to your client’s liking.

So, what should you look for when you think about quality?

Structure, size, style and stamina. Or, as we like to call them, The Four S’s!

Structure and size looks at the frame selection for the piece your client wants, whereas style and stamina look at the aesthetics and durability of it.

All four of these things are important and should be at the top of any manufacturer’s list to ensure high-quality furniture to your clients.

3. Collection

What can they make?
Is their selection limited?
Do they offer the styles your clients want?
If you don’t see it, can they still make it?

These are important questions to ask because you want to know what the manufacturer has to offer you and you want to know that they have the ability to diversify their portfolio by making what you need and what your clients want.

Their collections will give you this information because you’ll be able to see what they can do.

Another important question is: Can a designer bring their own collection?

This is especially important because if you want to create your own collection, you want to know that the manufacturer you trust with your collection can do it justice.

4. Delivery

The last thing to look for when choosing your manufacturer is delivery. And what do we mean by that?

Two things:

First, you want to look at how long the manufacturer will take to finish making your client’s furniture.

What is the turnaround time from the moment you place your order to the moment that order is finished and ready to be delivered to your client?

Second, does the manufacturer have a delivery service available?

With so much to do as an interior designer, you want to make sure you can make your job as easy and stress-free as possible. Finding the right manufacturer--one that can be used as a one-stop shop for fabric, furniture and delivery.
